GloPoWriMo: Day 10

It’s the tenth day of GloPoWriMo and today’s prompt was to write a poem of simultaneity – in which multiple things are happening at once.

I have written a poem about a modern day summer’s afternoon.  I hope you enjoy it.

Summer Afternoon

A beautiful purple butterfly landed on her foot
Wings shimmering in the afternoon sunshine
Fluttering in the gentle breeze
Staring at her phone screen
She never saw it

Shame she’d never get that one on Instagram

A tiny yellow bird sat on a tree nearby
Cheeping a cheery song into the air
A happy little melody
Ears stuffed with headphones
She never heard it

Shame she’d never tweet about that one

A yellow and black wasp flew by her shoulder
Sharp sting poised and ready over her flushed skin
Hovering lazily
Staring at her phone with headphones in
She never saw it
She never heard it

Felt it though

  1. This certainly brings modern day living to the fore. Far too many beautiful things are missed when our heads are focussed on a little bit of plastic in our hands. Inspiring. Love it. Especially the last line, really neat little twist.

    1. Thank you. It’s really been annoying me lately, trying to walk around town with zombies walking into you because their eyes and ears are cut off from the world, and then glaring at you with their glazed vacant eyes…
