GloPoWriMo: Day 7

It’s the seventh day of GloPoWriMo and today’s prompt was to write a list of all of your different layers of identity. For example, you might be a wife, a grandmother, a Philadelphian, a dental assistant, a rabid Phillies fan, a seamstress, retiree, agnostic, cancer survivor, etc. These are all ways you could be described or lenses you could be viewed through. Now divide all of those things into lists of what makes you feel powerful and what makes you feel vulnerable. Now write a poem in which one of the identities from the first list contends or talks with an identity from the second list.

I have written a poem which looks at the conflict between myself as a writer, and my office job.  I hope you enjoy it.

Day Job

Getting up in darkness
Creeping through the house
Writing morning pages
Not because it’s advisable
Or helpful
Or the time you’re most creative
But because when would you write otherwise
When there’s an office to go to
Work to do
Bills to pay

It’s expected
That creative work is done for free
For the love

Bills to pay
Can’t have electric for free
