GloPoWriMo 2021: Day 14

April 14, 2021 Donna M Day No comments exist

Today is the fourteenth day of GloPoWriMo and today’s poetry prompt was to write a poem that delves into the meaning of my last name.

My last name is a word that we quite literally use every day, of course, so everyone knows what it means. But people do have trouble separating the meaning from the word, which has inspired my poem. I hope you enjoy it.

A Day By Any Other Name

To say that everyone knows what Day means
is an understatement
but I’ve never met a person yet
who could spell it.

They put an E in the middle
or on the end,
change the first letter to any other consonant,
change the Y to an I
just to make sure,
and before you know it
your surname is BEIE,
which no one can pronounce.

Still,
the misspellings are preferable
to people marrying you off to
anyone and everyone called Knight,
just because.
