GloPoWriMo 2021: Day 23

April 23, 2021 Donna M Day No comments exist

Today is the twenty-third day of GloPoWriMo and my poem from yesterday was one of the featured poems on the NaPoWriMo website today which is so lovely!

Today’s prompt was to write a poem that responds, in some way, to another. This could be as simple as using a line or image from another poem as a jumping-off point, or it could be a more formal poetic response to the argument or ideas raised in another poem.

I chose to write a poem in response to Barbara Guest’s Dissonance Royal Traveller, which I read recently in a close reading event. I hope you enjoy it.

Understanding music

To understand music
there must be silence.
Absolute.

No breeze whistling
across distant moors.
Heavy storms break
through summer
smashing open al fresco dining
leaving the scraps to the birds
whose song is silenced.

Lectures and words,
insufficient.
Dressed up in theory
the music loses meaning,
dried out, like sunburnt heather.

The colour of music is clear
like glass shining
in the bright light
of a winter’s night.
Kneel and hear
the echo of silence.

To be musical is to listen.
To understand is to be silent.
Absolutely.
