GloPoWriMo 2021: Day 30

April 30, 2021 Donna M Day 3 comments

Today is the thirtieth and final day of GloPoWriMo! I’m so happy to finish this year after falling ill last year and having to give up a third of the way through.

Today’s prompt was to write a poem in the form of a series of directions describing how a person should get to a particular place. I hope you enjoy it.

All of my poems will be available to read until the end of May, at which point they’ll be edited and sent out into the big wide world (hopefully) for publication so any feedback on anything I’ve written over the month would be very welcome.

As the seagull flies

The beach is two minutes
from my house
as the seagull flies

but between my house
and the beach
is the leisure centre
with its huge fence

that protects my street
from being a car park.

So to get to the beach
from my house
you have to loop around
in a huge U shape.

Past the pretty garden
with the statues
and immaculate lawn

past the florist
with the seasonal arrangements,
bright colours
and quietly buzzing bees

past the big houses
with the posh cars
with scratched paint
as the air has started
to get sandy

past the ice cream van
where the queues are longest
on the coldest days

and onto the beach
so long as the tide is out,
don’t want to get wet feet.

Two minutes,
as the seagull flies

and the sky is full of them
so mind your head.

  1. Gotcha. Now I know how to get to your house. I love it. Very clear picture of how to get there. I will watch my head. Those seagulls are nasty. But lucky you. So close to the beach. Enjoy. Be well. Thanks for the encouragement. Loved your posts. I will be reading. You know that. Be well. I wish you miracles.
