GloPoWriMo: Day 1

Happy Easter everyone!  Did anyone get April fooled today?  No tricks for me at all, but I don’t think I’ll ever manage to top the year I convinced several people I’d eloped…

Today is also the first day of GloPoWriMo.  This is my third year and the first on this site.  I love writing poetry but for various reasons it doesn’t get high priority, so I love GloPoWriMo as it gets me to write at least 30 poems a year.

Today’s prompt was to write a poem that is based on a secret shame, or a secret pleasure. It could be eating too many cookies, or bad movies, or the time you told your sister she could totally brush her teeth with soap. I’ve written a poem about one of my favourite novels, and my thoughts on the protagonist/antagonist, which a lot of people have disagreed with.  I hope you enjoy it.

The Monster

Dead grey eyes
Yellow skin
Too tight
Lips black
Teeth white
Too white

Run away

The monster runs
From his creation
Runs fast and far
Away from his son

Never fitting in
Cast out

Is it wrong to feel pity
For one who squeezed the life
Out of one so young
And beautiful
One who had had the life squeezed
Into his dead tissue
And any chance of love
Taken away from him
So revolting

Is it wrong to call the creator
Of such pain and sorrow
Of fear and death
Of life
The real monster
Of the story

Horrifying hideous
Terrifying megalomaniac
Run away
