GloPoWriMo: Day 21

It’s the 21st day of GloPoWriMo and today’s prompt was to read the myth of Narcissus and try writing a poem that plays with the myth in some way. For example, you could imagine that imagine the water is speaking to you, the narcissus flower. Or you could write a poem in which the narcissus berates the Kardashians for stealing their neurosis. Or a poem that comments on the narcissism of our time, i.e. beauty and body obsession, etc.

I have flipped the myth on its head and taken the Echo element of the story to write a poem which creates a sense of what it is like to deal with Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).  I hope you find it interesting.

Mirror Mirror On The Wall

I look OK today
I think
I’ll do
Is that a spot?

Yes it is
And it’s huge
You’re so ugly

Make up will fix it
Just a dab

It’s going to take a lot more than that
It stands out even more now

That’s better
What’s wrong with my hair though?

It’s awful
And frizzy
Too big

That will fix it

Or make it fall out
And snap
And worse
Oh look more frizz
Could you be any uglier?
Or for that matter any fatter?
You’re so dumpy
You can’t go
You’re such a mess
Everyone will stare
Everyone will look
And they’ll take pictures
And then they can look at them forever
And everyone you’ve ever known, ever met, will see them
And then they can look at them forever

Actually I don’t feel too well
Maybe I should cancel
